PostHeaderIcon Seven Secrets to College Success

Seven Secrets to College SuccessCongratulations. You have made the decision to pursue higher education and to meet your goal of obtaining a college degree. You are embarking on a journey that can take you places you may have only dreamed of. Being in college can be fun but it can also be challenging. In this article I have put together ten steps that can help you to be successful at your collegiate goals.

1.Be punctual: Being late for class is a sign of disrespect. It tells the instructor you don’t want to be in his class or that you don’t take the class seriously. You also miss important information when you are late. Do you like it when people are late for something you’ve planned? Of course not. The instructor has spent time preparing for the class and you should give the instructor the time you have scheduled for his class. Besides, you have spent money for the class so you should show up on time to get what you paid for. Being punctual also helps when it comes time for grading. Grading is subjective and you want to do everything you can to leave a positive impression in your instructor’s mind so he can remember you this way doing grading. Being late for class doesn’t make a positive impression. So if you are habitually late, why should he sweat over your grade? Take my word for it, show up on time.

2.Do the homework: It is a waste of your time and the instructor’s time if you just sit in class but never do the assignments. Not doing class assignments is a guaranteed way to fail. Instructors use assignments to determine your knowledge and your grade. Assignments also help you to learn more about your field of study. Instructors can also tell if you half-heartedly completed an assignment. And don’t wait until the last minute to do your assignment. If you start early you will have a better product than if you waited until the due date to start on it.

3.Ask questions: Some people think asking questions is dumb. In reality it’s just the opposite. Instructors like students who ask questions. It shows you are interested in the class and that you really want to learn more about the subject the instructor is an expert in. The question you ask is probably the same question several other students in the class want answered so you’ll be doing them a favor.

4.Be confident: As an instructor, I like students who are confident in their abilities and act on them. Many times students are afraid to speak up in class or write a paper about an interesting subject because they are afraid what the instructor or their fellow students may think. As a result research papers or projects are sometimes dull and boring because they cover “safe” topics. It’s okay to be afraid. It’s not okay to let fear keep you from doing something you really want do. So go ahead and write that paper you’ve been longing to write or start on that project that you truly believe in. Be confident and be able to back up your findings or conclusions with evidence.

5.Volunteer: College instructors like students who volunteer. Volunteerism shows you want to really want to get involved in your major or your school. You don’t have to volunteer for something big. It could be something as simple as agreeing to be a group discussion leader or leading a class project. It could be volunteering to be on a student committee or to be on the board of a student chapter of an organization. Find ways to volunteer. This will not only help your grades but it can also enhance your studies.

6.Be prepared for tests: Depending on your instructor, you may not know when she may call a pop quiz. Successful students are prepared and always ready. You can be prepared by reading the class material before the class, participating in class discussions, and by doing the assignments and exercises in your textbook.

7.Get to know people: Successful people network. You have to do the same too, even on a college campus. When you get to know people on campus they share with you information that they have. This information can help you in a class, help you to save money or a purchase, assist you in choosing a class, or even choosing a major. Networking is a very important tool in the world of business so you might as well practice the skill while you are in college.

Remember that you can be a success in college. Yes it’s hard but you can do it!

College Sports Recruiting Opportunities

When contemplating strategies for getting financial help with colleges in such a dire economy, getting recruited to play college sports should be at the top of any student athlete’s list. Given that premise, in the environment that men’s college football recruiting has created, girls rule, and men’s football recruiting may be the best thing that ever happened to women’s college recruiting.

How does men’s football recruiting fit into the equation? A disproportionately large number of men’s scholarships go to football (up to 85 per school). To equalize sports opportunities across both genders, colleges support a broad range of women’s sports via scholarships. In fact, female athletes who start planning very early in high school may even be able to pick up a sport they have never competed in before, and find great athletic scholarship opportunities through the college recruiting process. And for those who worry that athletics will take the focus off of academics, fear not, as NCAA statistics show that female athletes have even higher college graduation rates than female college students who don’t compete (71% vs. 64% in Division 1, and 64% vs. 51% in Division 2.)

By the time girls get to high school, most know if they’re athletically inclined, and they have usually narrowed in on one or two sports of choice. But reality sometimes intervenes. A female student-athlete may have picked a sport that is highly competitive and she doesn’t make the team. She may not like the coaching staff or they may not like her. She may have an injury that prevents her from pursuing her sport of choice. She may be interested in other things like student government or theatre, which conflict with the timing of the sport season. Or she may just get burned out or bored with her sport. What should a committed student athlete do if she can’t pursue her favorite sport?

College Sports Recruiting Opportunities

There are all kinds of interesting sports opportunities available to girls who are willing to learn about them. Scholarships are offered for women in 24 sports in Division 1 and Division 2. If these sports are not offered at the high school level, there are probably club or recreational teams available somewhere nearby. It may be fairly easy to establish oneself as a player because many of these sports don’t necessarily get the press that more high profile sports like women’s basketball or volleyball get, so it may be more of a struggle for college programs to recruit players.

Here’s what the landscape looks like. For girls, the sports that are offered at a large percentage of colleges and offer a fair number of scholarships per school are:

• Basketball
• Volleyball
• Cross country/track and field
• Soccer
• Tennis
• Softball
• Golf
• Swimming/Diving

Here are some sports that aren’t available in as many schools, but have plenty of scholarships to give at the schools that have programs:

• Field Hockey
• Gymnastics
• Lacrosse
• Rowing
• Equestrian
• Ice Hockey

And here’s a fairly long list of sports that are offered in fewer schools and with less scholarships per school but they still have scholarships to give. Coaches in these programs may have a harder time filling these spots so they might offer great opportunities as well:

• Bowling
• Fencing
• Skiing
• Synchronized swim
• Water Polo
• Archery
• Badminton
• Rugby
• Squash
• Team Handball

I am the mother of boys, not girls, but I know a good sale when I see one. Colleges are serving up a double whammy right now-very difficult to get accepted, even more difficult to figure out how to pay for it. Participating in college athletics may make a student athlete more attractive to an admissions committee, and may result in a scholarship that will cover a large part of the cost. If I was the mother of a female student-athlete and my daughter were even moderately inclined toward athletics, but hadn’t settled on one sport yet, or was shut out from the sport she loved for some reason, I would encourage her to expand her athletic horizons a little.

So go ahead girls–pick up a hockey stick (field or ice, any kind will do), a bow and arrow, a fencing foil, a bowling ball, or another sporting implement they haven’t experienced before. Do a little research to see what schools offer scholarship programs for women in these sports. If these schools match your general criteria for a good college fit, you should pursue them. If you’re a dedicated female athlete, a few years of training and the world is wide open to you.

Sports Scholarships and College Basketball

For the most part of twentieth century, and continuing through to the twenty-first, people have enjoyed playing the game of basketball. Indeed, in the United States, professional and college basketball has gained quite a following nationwide. Now, with the immense popularity of the NBA and its superstars, many students are looking to get a sports scholarship to play in college teams and even perhaps in the NBA.

Basketball is a sport comprising of two teams, which in turn has five players each. The objective is to score by shooting a ball through a hoop, elevated on a post 10 feet from the ground, also known as the court. The ball is propelled through the court by means of dribbling or passing. A team (or player) that succeeds in getting the ball into the hoop scores a field goal, known as a shot or basket. Free throws are awarded whenever certain fouls are committed. Personal fouls include any type of illegal physical contact, which include hitting, pushing, lapping, holding, and illegal pick/screen, which results when an offensive player is moving. Free throws are rewarded to the fouled player depending on a number of factors which includes the gravity of the foul, the position of the player/s when the foul occurred, and whether the fouled player was in the act of shooting or not.

Sports Scholarships and College Basketball

Knowing what it takes to commit to an athletic scholarship is already a definite step towards succeeding in gaining a sports scholarship. Pursuing a college degree is not easy. In addition to the academic demands, expense and a family’s budget are important factors to consider when enrolling for college. Thus, playing in college basketball and becoming a college athlete as part of a sports scholarship program is even harder.

As in many other occasions, the Internet has proved to be a useful venue for both athletes and coaches looking for new talent. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact on things such as college basketball and how to obtain a sports scholarship. D1Athletes is an online community wherein high school and college athletes and coaches alike can share and exchange information they need. D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure.

Ways To Financing A College Education

Ways To Financing A College Education

The cost of receiving a secondary education is rising every year, college tuition costs are on a steady rise. This makes attending college for lower income students an arduous task, unless you a talent like being good at a sport. Athletic scholarships help level the field on getting a college education. There are a vast variety of scholarships available for high school athletes that would like to attend college.

There are basically two types of scholarships available to high school student athletes, the Full Scholarship also known as the full ride, and the Partial Scholarship. But, before a scholarship can be sought after or awarded, the student must get noticed by a member of the college athletics department. Getting noticed by the athletics department or their scouts is becoming increasingly difficult because of cuts in athletic scouting budgets.

Ways To Financing A College EducationSo the key to getting scouted is to provide a place that these scouts can view a profile of the students without taxing their budgets. One such resource is using a service that is offered by a company like Online Scouting Network. These types of companies provide a place for student-athletes to post their athletic and academic achievements to be viewed by college coaches and their staff free of charge to the college.

These types of services have benefits for both the student and college coaches, in-that it offers the students more visibility for their athletic and academic achievements, and coaches have a chance to view more potential prospects in an efficient and productive format. The Internet provides a great foundation for high school athletes to showcase their abilities and achievements, so that can gain more exposure in an extremely competitive sports scholarship environment.

The first steps to gaining exposure for a high school students athletic and academic achievement’s is to visit: http://www.onlinescoutingnetwork.com to take a look at the benefits of having a sports profile showcased on the Internet.

The Benefits of a College Education

When it comes to college, many young people feel as though they do not need it in order to make a good living. As the young people grow and become adults, it is soon realized that not having a college education was not such a great idea.

Those with a college degree are far likely to be hired for any position out there, before someone without a degree.

In fact, someone without a degree but ten years of hands oo experience is often times passed up on for someone with no hands on experience but a college degree under their belt.

Because of that fact alone it is vital to make sure that you obtain a college degree. Whether you are seventeen years old or forty years old now is the time in your life to begin thinking about improving your education.

You are never too young or too old to think about college as you have a lot of life to live and you want to be able to make the most of it. But besides the money aspect of the whole college issue, there are other reasons to earn a college education.

Those with a college degree under their belt, no matter what it was that they specialized in, are treated with more respect in the community. While that is a sad thing to say and some people are not likely to believe it, it is true.

The Benefits of a College Education

People will take what you have to say more seriously if you are college educated. Even though there are incredibly smart and talented people all over the place without a college education, they are not given the opportunities that someone with a degree gets. Fair or unfair, this is the way that the world works.

You will also gain a lot of life experience by attending college. Besides all of the stuff that you will learn from the books, you will learn a lot during your years in college.

Interaction with authority and your peers is a big part of it. It is a nice way to taste the “real world” without having to pay the mortgages that go along with it. Of course, if you are an adult returning to school you will still have that mortgage but there is still a lot to be learned in terms of life experiences.

College is without a doubt a time in your life that you will not regret or soon forget. Even though it may be a little stressful and maybe even a little scary, your future, your happiness, and your over all well being depend on you making the right decisions about your education.

It is time to act now. The sooner you get up and get started the sooner it will all be done and over with. Once you are finished you can put all of that knowledge to good use and start earning the wages that your time is truly worth.
